The siege has ended and the battle is won. Now negotiations are underway for peace and one of the demands of the victorious army is a hundred peace hostages to be offered as slaves to the mighty Parsadi Empire.

As one of the highest ranking sons of the kingdom, Chief Physician Adon is included into the ranks of those selected to serve and is brought into close contact with General Istrak, commander of the winning party. For the strongly independent Adon, who abhors manipulative women of power, she is an interesting study of contradicting characteristics that the healer in him just cannot ignore. For underneath the pomp and armor, General Istrak is an intriguing woman of determined courage and vulnerable sensitivity, a damsel in distress hiding beneath her protective uniform.

She is the feared General Istrak, the sword that felled the Eber kingdom. He is the slave physician, willing to embrace exile to a foreign land to avoid an unwanted marriage. Reading into the night to find if THE SWORD AND THE SLAVE will ever be able to have a future together makes all the lost sleep worthwhile for me.

Though I have not read the first book of this DAMSELS OF DISTRESS series, Michelle L. Levigne has definitely convinced me to search out THE PRINCE AND THE PICKPOCKET, the prequel to this book and wait impatiently for the rest of the damsels to make their appearances. Another keeper for the bookshelves found!
